The Student route: an important change to the financial requirement

From 2 January 2025, the maintenance funds students must hold to meet the financial requirement has increased.

Anyone who is applying for the Student visa route on or after 2 January 2025 must hold the following to meet the financial requirement:

  • £1,483 per month in London (for the duration of the course, up to a maximum of 9 months)
  • £1,136 per month outside London (for the duration of the course, up to a maximum of 9 months)

If the applicant pays a deposit to the student sponsor for accommodation arranged by the sponsor, this deposit (up to a maximum of £1,483) can be offset against the maintenance costs.

Students boarding at residential independent schools do not need to show they hold maintenance funds.

Will my application be affected if I applied before 2 January 2025?

An application for entry clearance, permission to enter or stay, or administrative review made before 2 January 2025 will be decided in accordance with the old Rules which were in force on 1 January 2025 and will not be affected by the change.
