The Graduate route visa duration is being reduced from two years to 18 months from 1 January 2027.
The Graduate route, previously known as the Post Study Work (“PSW”) visa, enables international students to live and work in the UK without sponsorship after completing their studies. Graduates can work in the UK but are not tied to a sponsor and can also be self-employed, including setting up a business.
Applicants for the Graduate visa must have a Student visa as their current or most recent visa for the UK and must have successfully completed their course to apply.
What is changing?
Students completing Bachelor's or Master's degrees are currently eligible for a Graduate visa for two years after completing their course. This is to be reduced to 18 months for all applicants applying on or after 1 January 2027.
PhD students will continue to qualify for a Graduate visa for three years as before.
Who is affected?
If you are currently studying in the UK or planning to study in the UK below PhD level, you may be affected by the change. Whether you will be affected will depend on when you will complete your course.
If you apply for the Graduate route before 1 January 2027, you will receive a two-year visa.
Anyone applying on or after 1 January 2027 will only receive an 18-month visa.
