Home Office will impose a visa brake on the Student and Skilled Worker routes

From 26 March 2026, Afghan nationals will no longer be able to apply for a Skilled Worker visa from outside the UK. Entry clearance applications on the Student route from nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan will also be refused.

On 5 March 2026, the Home Secretary announced that the government will introduce a visa brake to protect the UK’s border security.

The brake will apply to online applications submitted from outside the UK on or after 26 March 2026, regardless of the date on which a Certificate of Sponsorship or Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies is assigned.

Under the current Immigration Rules, the earliest date on which an entry clearance application can be submitted is 6 months before the course start date stated on the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, or 3 months before the work start date stated on the Certificate of Sponsorship.
