English language requirement for Indefinite Leave to Remain to increase from B1 to B2

The level of English required for Indefinite Leave to Remain applications will increase from CEFR level B1 to level B2 for most immigration routes from 26 March 2027.

Applications for Indefinite Leave to Remain submitted before 26 March 2027 will continue to be assessed under the current requirements.

The minimum level will increase from CEFR B1 (intermediate) to CEFR B2 (independent user). B2 broadly equates to an A-level standard of English.

A Home Office press release here has more information:

Since January, applicants for most work visas have been required to meet the higher A level standard in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Most foreign nationals applying for settlement must now meet the new A-level equivalent standard, raised from the current GCSE level.

It takes an estimated 200 hours of learning to move between the two levels, which must be proved by a test with a Home Office-approved provider.
