Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year Awards - 'the legal aid Oscars'

Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year Awards 2012

At a prestigious event in London in June Turpin & Miller LLP were recognised nationally as Legal Aid Firm of the Year 2012. The judging panel was chaired by Michael Mansfield QC who gave out the awards at the event which was attended by over 400 members of the legal profession.

The award recognised the firm's dedication to serving its local community as well as its national reputation for taking on groundbreaking cases. We were commended for the way in which various departments work together to solve the multitude of issues that each client invariably faces.

Michael Mansfield QC, in a rousing speech, called for 'an uprising against what has happened to legal aid' and said that the 'political and legal fight against the legal aid cuts must continue'. Turpin & Miller LLP have been very involved in the campaign against the cuts to legal aid and remain committed to finding innovative ways to assist clients without extensive means at their disposal.

The 11 judges selected finalists after reading over 1,000 pages of nominations. Entries were supported by testimonials from clients, medical and other experts, judges and campaigners.

Partner Philip Turpin said 'We are absolutely delighted to have this recognition in our 10th anniversary year. When Clare Miller and I set up the firm in 2002 we wanted to provide the highest quality legal service to the people of Oxfordshire. Since then, we have grown steadily and in 2010 we opened a second office in Reading. The overwhelming support which we received from clients, community groups and other professionals in both counties has confirmed that we have achieved our goal'.

Sandra Fredman QC hon, a Professor of Law at Oxford University, who nominated the firm said 'We work closely with Turpin & Miller through the Oxford Legal Assistance project. This gives our law students an invaluable opportunity to assist vulnerable members of our local community through volunteering their time at a weekly clinic. I was very pleased to be able to nominate the firm for the work they do and am thrilled that they have won the award'.
