Legal Aid
We have a contract with the Legal Services Commission under which we provide publicly funded legal advice, assistance and representation (this is usually referred to as ‘Legal Aid’).
Generally Legal Aid is only available if you have a low income (or no income) or you are in receipt of certain benefits. The financial eligibility rates can be quite complicated but we will try to establish at the beginning whether you are entitled to Legal Aid to pay the costs of your case.
This does mean that we will need to ask questions about your income and any savings – and those of your partner – and we are likely to ask to see payslips, benefit letters, bank statements and other similar documents.
You can check you eligibility for different types of legal aid by going to the Legal Aid calculator at CLS Direct.
